The National Center on Family Homelessness at American Institutes for Research reports that
- 2,483,539 children experienced homelessness in the U.S. in 2013
- This represents one in every 30 children in the U.S.
- This is an historic high in the number of homeless children in the U.S.
- 98,212 children experienced homelessness in Illinois in 2012-2013

On June 20, 2010, the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) released Opening Doors, the nation’s first ever comprehensive plan to prevent and end homelessness. Updated annually, the plan has four key goals:
- Finish the job of ending chronic homelessness in 2016
- Prevent and end Veterans’ homelessness in 2015
- Prevent and end homelessness among families, youth and children in 2020
- Set a path to ending all types of homelessness

Here in McHenry County, a number of government agencies, non-profit organizations and individuals work together to address the needs of people experiencing homelessness in our own backyard through the McHenry County Continuum of Care. The CoC meets monthly to tackle issues such as the lack of affordable housing, need for employment, transportation, mental and medical health care supports and to coordinate care through the services available.
