For over 35 years, Home of the Sparrow (HOS) has been committed to providing Hope, Opportunity, and Support that empowers women and children as they journey from homelessness to self-sufficiency. This Mother’s Day, you can change lives with a Gift of Hope contribution. In fiscal year 2021 (ended June 30, 2021), HOS served 378 unduplicated clients across all housing and intake programs, and responded to an additional 1,710 referral calls for assistance. It is only with support from the community that we can respond and serve those who are one of the most vulnerable populations seeking help.

Meet Hannah – A Mother’s Story of Resilience
Over 73% of the women who come to HOS have a history of domestic violence which is one of the many causes of homelessness. Hannah had been in an abusive relationship for years. Over time she found the courage to leave. Hannah gathered up what little belongings she had along with her two children in hopes of creating a more stable life. Hannah was unexpectedly laid off. With no source of income, she could not make it on her own nor afford any type of housing. She grew worried about the fate of their future. She contacted HOS, and was placed into a program. She knew there would be obstacles ahead, but with support from HOS Case Managers, she had the Hope and Support for an Opportunity of a new beginning. Hannah’s dreams of a safe home for her kids would soon became a reality. With HOS’s help, Hannah exited into community-based affordable housing. A HOS Case Manager worked closely with Hannah to assist her in her employment search and provided her family with basic needs items such as clothing, toiletries, and Sparrow’s Nest Thrift Store vouchers for furniture. Hannah and her family are on the right path towards self-sufficiency. She is working a few part-time jobs and is working diligently on her financial goals to support her children and leave the past behind.
